*Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District* recognized a great need for reliable, professional child care for working parents in 2007. The Modoc Child Development Advisory Committee conducted a Child Care Family Needs Survey in 2008 and found 48% of responding parents were not able to find childcare in Surprise Valley. The lack of available and/or consistent childcare within our community has contributed to employee absenteeism and parents not being able to pursue employment opportunities. The shortage of available childcare has had serious ramifications in our community.
The Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District board passed a resolution on March 18, 2008 for the Surprise Valley Child Development Center committee to seek funding for the development and implementation of a state-licensed Child Development Center to fulfill the need for reliable child care and provide enrichment through structured early childhood curriculum. The Center opened its doors March 2010.
